In relation to the architecture Barcelona is mostly famous with Gaudi, presented by La Sagrada Familia and some other buildings throughout the city. However, there are also other architectural masterpieces available for sightseeing and having same cultural value. One of those is the Cathedral of St. Eulalia, located in a Ciutat Vella, the old city district, not far away from a big variety of short term rentals Barcelona.
Built in 13-15 centuries, with most of the works done in 14 century, and the West Front finished in 19 century, it is a perfect example of Gothic and neo-gothic church, being the seat of archbishop of Spain nowadays. Traditionally, its roof is decorated with gargoyles showing a wide range of both real and mythical animals. In the beginning of the middle ages there has been a chapel on this site, but later on it was destroyed in 985. The cathedral is dedicated to saint Eulalia who suffered martyrdom during the Roman times in the city being a thirteen-year old girl in a year 302 AD. Due to that there are 13 geese kept in the cloister of the cathedral constantly, as a symbol of the age of poor little girl, suffered 13 tortures including the decapitation (separation the head from the body) in the end.
The masses are held in the cathedral in both Spanish and Catalan languages, on scheduled time daily, so if your vacation rental in Barcelona is situated nearby you can easily come and visit both the cathedral and the mess, listen to the organ music and think about the destiny of a girl murdered for nothing.
