La Festa Major de Gracia

Friday 15 July 2011

It’s difficult to imagine a city, which has more festivals than Barcelona. Almost every week of the year Catalonia's are having celebrations, parades and holidays. One that deserves a particular interest is La Festa Major de Gracia, one week long, happening in the middle of August. Starting August 15 on the Assumption Day, it is one of the biggest festivals with more than half a million
participants. It is an old traditional celebration, and this year it has 195 years anniversary. Probably in 5 years time the streets of Barcelona will be overcrowded to see a 200 years old one, but it is actually worth visiting every year.
During this festival around 20 streets of the Gracia district are transformed into rainforest's, pirate ships and Jurassic landscapes. Night concerts and other activities go along with competition between participating streets and the programmer includes more than half a thousand events in total. Not only streets, but also balcony decoration compete during this festival, however the winners are announced on the second day, as the further it goes, the more decorations are destroyed by thousands and thousands of tourists. That is why a better idea would be to come to Barcelona on the Assumption Day, which is also a public holiday, in order to have an opportunity to evaluate the efforts of competitors in their primal conditions.
This amount of people willing to see the Catalonia most expected fest of August requires a lot of accommodation like cheap flats Barcelona and hostels. If you are thinking of going there this August, make sure that your vacation rental in Barcelona is booked on time.
