Catalonia's can be really offended if you call them Spanish. The pride these people have for their culture is enormous. Nevertheless officially Cataluña is not a separate independent unit, but a part of Spain, even the street names there are written in two languages. That’s why double check when searching for your vacation rental in Barcelona and asking for
directions on the street, you can easily get confused. Catalan is the official language here, but if you speak Spanish, you will not have problems, as all the Catalan people understand and speak Spanish as well.
Next step after you arrived to the city, found the right way, had some rest, unpacked and made a plan of what to do is to go for seeking for adventures. However, first you need to eat. Well, here the menus are usually in both Catalan and Spanish. However you can simply order something famous and traditional in order to not to have communication problems. When you are in the center and in the most of the touristic places, you can feel free to talk English, but if you want to explore less overcrowded and famous parts of the city, a good idea would be to learn some Spanish phrases or at least to know a number of taxi that provide services for tourists and therefore speak English. However, be careful with taxis, like everywhere in the world, you need to look after the rates applied and the route followed (if you see the same building third time, probably you are going rounds for making more kilometers).
If language knowledge is not your strong side, don’t forget to prepare prior to your visit, get yourself an underground map in addition to the regular map of the city and mark the address of you short term rentals Barcelona in order to find it more easily. Even if you will not understand a word people around you are saying, they will draw you the directions you need to take.
